Using dental crowns to protect a natural tooth from damage

At Main Line Dental Health & Wellness, Drs. Jerald Matt and Naila Bryan of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, work alongside patients, helping them choose the restorations that best fit their needs. This may include fabricating and placing a dental crown or “tooth cap.” Dental crowns play a vital role in restoring natural teeth that have been damaged or significantly affected by a large area of tooth decay. These caps are placed over the tooth, offering an extra layer of protection and allowing patients to keep their natural teeth without extractions.

What materials are used to create dental crowns?

While in the past, many dentists have placed metal or gold tooth caps over natural teeth, today’s patients have a much stronger desire for restorations that blend in cleanly with the natural smile and do not look like obvious dental restorations. Thanks to the iTero intraoral digital scanner device and the other technology used in our practice, we provide fast and accurate restorations made from porcelain, which closely mimics the appearance of natural tooth enamel. We can create digital impressions of the prepared tooth using porcelain that matches the patient’s smile. These are sent to a dental laboratory to create the final restoration, ensuring proper fit over the natural tooth structure.

How much does a tooth crown cost?

There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing the correct restoration and determining the cost of treatment. This includes a patient’s dental insurance coverage and the type of crown fabricated. Talking to our dental team at Main Line Dental Health & Wellness is the first step in learning more.
